A respected leader named Okonkwo is part of a Umuofia tribe of the Igobo people. Okonkwo lives in fear of being like his father whom is a failure and gained no titles over his years of living. As Okonkwo grows older he builds himself a home and a strong reputation as a wrestler and hard-working farmer. It all pays off and he becomes wealthy through his crops and gains three wives.
Okonkwo's life soon hits a tragic turn when a unexpected murder takes place and Okonkwo ends up adopting a boy named Ikemefuna from another village. Okonkwo soons adapt to the boy and loves him as his own son. Note that Ikemefuna was a sacrifice from his village to regain peace. Okonkwo comes to love Ikemefuna more than his other son Nwoye. After about 3 years, the tribe of Umuofia decides to kill Ikemefuna. Okonkwo takes place in his killing and slaughters him. Although he loved him, he showed no emotion whatsoever because he doesn't want to show weakness like his father. Inside though, he feels painful guilt and regret.
Further into the book, during a funeral, Okonkwo accidentally shoots his gun and kills a boy. For the crime he committed, the town tells him to leave for seven years to his mother's homeland, Mbanta. Okonokwo packs his valuables and his 3 wives and all his children follow him. While living in Mbanta, he leans about the white missionaries who try to end the Igbo people. They bring in their own culture and outcast converts.
Soon enough, The Igbo attempt to talk things through with the missionaries, but the leader gets captured by the Christians and jails them for several days. Including Okonkwo. There was a court messenger who would tell the people what would happen in the village, Okonkwo building up such anger kills the messenger. He soon realized that his clan would not be able to defeat the white men. Devastated, knowing that he is becoming weak Okonkwo ends his life by hanging himself.
